Mengapa Saya Memilih USM Tahun 1989, saya sebenarnya sudah diterima di Cornell University, AS. Namun, karena kendala beasiswa, Allah menunjukkan jalan lain melalui Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Surat rekomendasi doktoral saya saat itu didukung dan ditandatangani langsung oleh dua tokoh besar: Bapak Mohammad Natsir (mantan Perdana Menteri RI 1950) dan Prof. Dr. Sutan Takdir Alisjahbana. Perjalanan riset perbandingan politik masyarakat Muslim antara Indonesia dan Pakistan ini membuah hasil kelulusan cum laude pada tahun 1992. Disertasinya diterbitkan oleh LIPI pada 1995 dan menjadi buku perbandingan politik terbaik kala itu. Semoga cerita ini bisa menjadi penyemangat bagi generasi muda.
