Our Government is taking necessary measures to effectively manage the drought situation across the State and protect the interests of farmers facing distress. We had already declared 217 taluks drought-affected. Based on scientific assessment and field verification, 9 more taluks have now been declared drought-affected, taking the total to 226. Among the newly declared taluks, Sakleshpur in Hassan district has been classified as severely drought-affected, while Khanapur in Belagavi, Hosanagara and Sagara in Shivamogga, Puttur, Moodbidri and Mulki in Dakshina Kannada, and Joida and Dandeli in Uttara Kannada have been classified as moderately drought-affected. Monitoring will continue in the remaining taluks, and those meeting the prescribed criteria will be added to the drought-affected list in the next phase. Protecting farmers’ livelihoods, providing appropriate relief for crop loss and safeguarding rural communities remain priorities for our Government.

The High Court’s decision to strike down the law enhancing reservation has raised concerns over social justice and equal opportunities in education and Government employment. Even though aware that the increase would have taken total reservation to 56%, beyond the 50% ceiling, the previous BJP Government enacted the law before the elections without first creating the necessary framework for constitutional protection, raising several questions. An increase in reservation must not remain merely an announcement; it must also be legally sustainable.
